About Our Lady of Guadalupe
Our
Story
Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church is an offspring of Saint Joseph’s Church, the oldest Catholic Church in Lubbock.
In the late 1970’s a need for ministry to the many Catholics in southeast Lubbock had been recognized by area clergy as well as lay leaders. A building at 915 42nd Street was purchased from the Assembly of God Church and remodeled extensively, with most of the work completed by volunteers. Religious education rooms and a small hall were built into the structure, and dedication ceremonies took place in June of 1979.
Pallottine Father Michael McCormack, SAS, was named the first pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe when it became a parish in June 1980. Father John Casey, SAC, was his associate pastor and then succeeded Father McCormack as pastor. In 1984, with plans to build an Interstate through Lubbock, the original structure was displaced, so land was purchased for a new church. Plans were drawn up and a house was purchased for the pastor a few blocks from the new property.
Monsignor Antonio Gonzalez arrived in the parish prior to the beginning of the construction of the new church in 1985. Under his guidance, construction was completed, and the new church was dedicated on September 21, 1986.
Monsignor James O’Connor became pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe in 1988. He supervised the construction of the new Parish Education Center, which was dedicated November 19, 2000. Funding came from parishioners, the Kennedy Foundation and Catholic Extension. In 2001 Father Glenn Rosendale became the pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Father Andres Mendoza became pastor from 2002 to 2015. Father Martin Piña became pastor from 2015 to 2024. Our current pastor is Father Jose de Dios Gonzalez who was appointed pastor on July 1, 2024.
